  1. Church founded in Korea 1954 by the Reverend
  2. Sun Myung Moon. The number of members (often
  3. called `moonies') is about 200,000 worldwide.
  4. The theology unites Christian and Taoist
  5. ideas and is based on Moon's book Divine
  6. Principle, which teaches that the original
  7. purpose of creation was to set up a perfect
  8. family, in a perfect relationship with God.
  9. This was thwarted by the Fall of Man, and
  10. history is seen as a continuous attempt to
  11. restore the original plan, now said to have
  12. found its fulfilment in Reverend and Mrs
  13. Moon. The Unification Church teaches that
  14. marriage is essential for spiritual
  15. fulfilment, and marriage partners are
  16. sometimes chosen for members by Reverend
  17. Moon, although individuals are free to reject
  18. a chosen partner. Marriage, which takes the
  19. form of mass blessings by Reverend and Mrs
  20. Moon, is the most important ritual of the
  21. church; it is preceded by the wine or
  22. engagement ceremony. In the 1970s, the
  23. Unification Church was criticized for its
  24. methods of recruitment and alleged
  25. `brainwashing', as well as for its business,
  26. political, and journalistic activities. There
  27. are few other rituals, although there is a
  28. weekly pledge, which is a ceremony of
  29. rededication. Accusations that the church
  30. engages in a cultlike programming of members,
  31. and its business, political, and journalistic
  32. activities have given it a persistently
  33. controversial and derogatory reputation.
